Today we are meeting the characters of your birth chart. We’re breaking down all 12 zodiac signs through their core archetypes and then explore the planetary archetypes, learning what each planet actually represents and why every single one has a unique role to play in your chart.

Before we dive into the signs and planets themselves, let’s quickly revisit the framework we established in Chapter One. Every birth chart is built from four basic pieces:

• Planets = What

• Signs = How

• Houses = Where

• Aspects = How everything interacts

Those four ideas are going to follow us throughout this entire series. In Chapter One, the goal was simply to understand the map and to know what a birth chart is, what you’re looking at and what each major component is doing. This week, we’re taking the next step and beginning to learn the actual language. We’re focusing on the first two pieces of that formula, the planets and the signs.

The planets tell us what part of the personality or life experience we’re talking about. The signs tell us how that energy expresses itself. Once those two pieces start clicking together, astrology becomes dramatically easier to understand. Instead of memorizing random placements like “Venus in Scorpio” or “Mars in Gemini,” you’ll begin to understand why those placements mean what they mean.

So that’s exactly where we’re headed next.

What Is an Archetype?

Before we start memorizing signs and planets, we need to talk about one word you’re going to see constantly in astrology. Archetype. In simple terms an archetype is a recurring pattern of energy, behavior, motivation, or experience. Astrology is built on archetypes. Aries is not just “angry.” Virgo is not just “organized.” Scorpio is not just “sexual.” Pisces is not just “emotional.” Those are stereotypes and an archetype is much broader. Take Aries for example. The deeper Aries archetype is about initiation, courage, independence, instinct, action and the willingness to go first. That energy can show up in a healthy way as bravery, leadership, confidence and self-reliance. Or it can show up in a shadow expression as impulsivity, selfishness, unnecessary conflict or acting before thinking. Same sign, same core energy but two very different expression.

That’s one of the most important things to understand as you begin learning astrology. No sign is inherently good or bad. Every sign has a higher expression and a shadow expression. Every placement contains gifts and every placement contains challenges. How that energy actually shows up depends on the rest of the chart, the person’s level of self-awareness, their environment, their experiences and a million other factors.

This is also why I cringe a little when I see things like “Top 5 most toxic zodiac signs” as astrology is so much more nuanced than that. A Scorpio who has done years of emotional work may express that archetype through loyalty, emotional depth, resilience and profound intimacy, but another Scorpio may express the same underlying energy through jealousy, control, secrecy and obsession. The archetype gives us the potential expression, it does not sentence someone to a personality. That distinction is going to matter throughout this entire course.

Signs vs. Planets: What’s the Difference?

This is probably one of the most important beginner concepts to understand. Remember the framework from Chapter One:

• Planet = What

• Sign = How

The planet tells us what part of the personality we’re talking about, and the sign tells us how that part expresses itself. For example Venus represents love, attraction, pleasure, values, relationships and beauty. So Venus is the what. But Venus in Aries is going to express those things very differently than Venus in Cancer. That’s the how. Same planet, different expression. Think of the planet as the actor and the sign as the role or costume they’re wearing. The actor remains the same, but the character changes. Mars is always going to deal with action, desire, anger, drive and pursuit. But Mars in Libra may act through diplomacy and consideration, Mars in Scorpio may act through intensity and strategy and Mars in Sagittarius may act through spontaneity, adventure and instinct.

Again, same planet, different sign, different expression. This is where astrology begins to move beyond memorizing random definitions and starts becoming a language.

But Aren’t Some Planets Connected to Certain Signs?

Yes. This is where planetary rulership comes in. Each zodiac sign is traditionally associated with a ruling planet. For example, Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus is ruled by Venus, Gemini is ruled by Mercury, Cancer is ruled by the Moon, Leo is ruled by the Sun and so on. You can think of the ruling planet as having a natural relationship with that sign. Mars and Aries both share themes of action, courage, assertion and initiation. Venus and Taurus both relate to pleasure, value, beauty and sensuality. Mercury and Gemini both deal heavily with communication, information and mental activity. But this does not mean the sign and planet are interchangeable. Aries is not Mars and Mars is not Aries. One is a zodiac sign, one is a planet, they simply share a symbolic relationship. This distinction becomes much more important later when we start looking at chart rulers, dignities and more advanced interpretation.

For now, just remember that The planet tells you what and the sign tells you how. Rulership tells us which planets have a particularly strong symbolic relationship with which signs.

Putting the Formula Into Practice

Let’s use Venus. Venus represents love, attraction, pleasure, relationships, beauty, values and what we enjoy. That part stays the same. Now let’s change the sign.

Venus in Aries: Venus in Aries tends to approach love with boldness, excitement, directness, passion and pursuit. This placement may enjoy chemistry, spontaneity, flirtation and the thrill of something new. It often appreciates people who know what they want. There can be something very: “I like you. You like me. Why are we pretending otherwise?” about Venus in Aries. Love is expressed through Aries and tends to be fast, direct, passionate and alive.

Venus in Cancer: Now put that same Venus in Cancer. The planet hasn’t changed. We’re still talking about love, attraction and relationships but the expression is completely different. Venus in Cancer often seeks emotional safety, nurturing, closeness, loyalty, sentimentality and a feeling of home within a relationship. This placement may show love by taking care of someone, remembering little details, making them food, checking that they got home safely and creating emotional security. Venus is now expressing itself through Cancer.

Venus in Aquarius: Now let’s move Venus into Aquarius. Again, same Venus but a very different expression. Venus in Aquarius often values friendship, individuality, intellectual connection, unconventional relationships, independence and freedom. This placement may need space inside a relationship. It may be attracted to people who are unusual, interesting, intelligent or completely different from everyone else. It can love deeply while still needing room to remain an individual.

So look at the differences:

• Venus in Aries: love through passion and pursuit.

• Venus in Cancer: love through emotional security and nurturing.

• Venus in Aquarius: love through friendship, freedom, and individuality.

Same planet but three completely different relationship styles. This is exactly why knowing someone’s Sun sign tells you so little about how they actually function in a relationship. Once you understand the planet and the sign separately, you can begin combining them. That’s the skill we’re going to start building in this chapter.

So let’s begin where every astrologer begins... what exactly is astrology?

What Is Astrology? What Is It Not?

At its core, astrology is the study of the symbolic relationship between the movements of the heavens and life here on Earth. A birth chart is essentially a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. By looking at where the Sun, Moon, planets and other celestial bodies were positioned at that moment, astrologers interpret symbolic patterns that can provide insight into personality, relationships, strengths, challenges, motivations and recurring themes throughout life.

Notice one word that keeps appearing: Symbolic. Astrology is not the belief that giant balls of gas millions of miles away are magically forcing you to make specific decisions. Astrology is not fate carved into stone. It is not a replacement for science, psychology, medicine, therapy or personal responsibility. And despite what social media would have you believe, astrology is definitely not deciding that someone is a walking red flag simply because they’re a Gemini. Instead, think of astrology as a symbolic language. Just as music uses notes and literature uses words, astrology uses planets, signs, houses, and aspects to describe patterns of human experience. It doesn’t remove your free will, it simply offers another lens through which to understand yourself and the people around you.

Whether you see astrology as psychology, spirituality, symbolism, archetypes or simply a fun way to reflect on your life is entirely up to you. Personally, I’ve found it to be one of the most fascinating tools for understanding why people are so wonderfully different from one another.

But none of that really makes sense without understanding the foundation first. It's a little like trying to appreciate a symphony before you've learned what the instruments actually sound like. You might enjoy it but you'll miss so much of what's happening beneath the surface.

For a long time I've wanted to create a true Astrology Basics course, and not just a list of keywords or "memorize this planet means this." I wanted something that actually teaches you how to think about astrology so you can start reading charts with confidence instead of feeling like you're drowning in information.

So I figured...what better place to build it than here on Substack? Beginning in August, I'll be launching a weekly series that walks through astrology from the ground up.

I'm refusing to call them modules because every online course seems to have modules these days, and frankly it's boring. So we're calling them Cosmic Chapters. ✨

Each Cosmic Chapter will include a free overview available to everyone, introducing the core ideas and giving you the big-picture concepts. Under the paid tier, I'll expand each one into a full course-style lesson with much deeper explanations, examples, practical frameworks and exercises designed to help everything actually click.

If you're brand new to astrology this series is for you. If you've been studying for years but feel like you learned everything in random pieces and want a stronger foundation, this is for you too.

Because once you truly understand the framework, everything else starts making sense. Those irresistible synastry aspects become richer. Relationship compatibility becomes far more nuanced than "your Venus matches their Mars." Inner healing? Shadow work? Career? Life purpose? Family dynamics? They all rest on the same foundation.

I'm really excited to finally bring this project to life and I hope it helps make astrology feel less overwhelming and more like learning a beautiful new language.
